Game Director
Hands-on Game Director for WHAT THE CAR?
Do you love working in small, creative teams turning wild ideas into a reality? Do you thrive on community feedback? Could you ensure an already loved comedy game remains goofy in all the right ways? Awesome. We need to talk!
Triband is the award-winning studio behind the WHAT THE? comedy game series, played by millions worldwide. From our home in central Copenhagen, more than 60 wonderful humans are united by a simple mission: to make everyone laugh.
WHAT THE CAR? is our absurdly silly racing adventure game which addresses fundamental questions such as… What if a car had legs? Or a jetpack? Or secretly identified as a sailboat? First launched in 2023 on Apple Arcade and now also on Steam, it has gained a steady following of dedicated fans who have contributed hundreds of thousands of community-built levels.
We’re looking for a Game Director to grab the creative wheel (sorry) on a small but mighty team to help steer CAR into the future. You’ll guide decisions on which jokes are worth pursuing, how we maintain and push quality and which turns to take along the road. You'll work closely with studio creative leadership and external partners to help define the future of CAR and to explore opportunities to reach even bigger audiences.
If you’re already rethinking what a car is, keep reading!
Here’s what you'll do day to day
Take product responsibility for WHAT THE CAR? and ensure that it remains true to and evolves upon the existing WHAT THE? universe
Along with studio leadership, define the game’s ongoing vision, strategy and goals
Effectively communicate the vision within the team to enable team and individual autonomy
Work closely with the Producer and team to create achievable product roadmaps built upon a humanistic approach to production
Contribute directly to project development, such as creating prototypes, implementing gameplay or building levels in-engine
Facilitate team-wide creative processes which ensure all ideas have been heard and the best solutions are agreed and understood
Ensure we maintain a high quality bar across the game, and help catch what’s not working before it ships
Be part of nurturing a creative, inclusive, high performing, high trust team culture
Immerse yourself in user feedback, turning what players tell us into decisions about where the game goes next
You’re a great match if
You bring 8+ years working in creative product lead roles
You’ve worked on at least 3 commercial and shipped game projects
You are extremely familiar with one or more commercial game engines, including Unity
You're a born communicator and collaborator who enjoys working closely with every member of a team
You understand and appreciate the WHAT THE? universe and are excited to be an integral part of its future
You use AI to boost workflows and productivity, giving you more time to focus on the important creative decisions
You prefer to “show don’t tell” by demonstrating ideas through prototypes over endless design discussions
You have experience working on family-friendly titles for a casual audience
Nice to have
Experience coding in C#
Experience with game design for a live game
Experience in the mobile premium space
What always matters to us at Triband
You thrive in taking ownership of your area: you spot problems, seek advice when needed, and implement creative solutions that push projects forward
You’re motivated by collaboration, mutual respect, inclusiveness and creativity while actively contributing to sustaining that culture
You believe games are made by teams, not rockstars and that great ideas can come from anyone
You bring curiosity, generosity, and flexibility, along with strong opinions, especially when they come with reasoning, openness, and a willingness to actually test them
You love exploration and experimentation but don’t get too precious when the evidence tells you you’re wrong
You value a positive work environment and contribute to keeping the studio a fun and supportive place to be
