Senior Gameplay Programmer
Senior Gameplay Programmer on WHAT THE CAR?
Do you love working in small, creative teams turning wild ideas into a reality? What about having creative and technical ownership from ideation through to release? Read on!
Triband is the award-winning studio behind the WHAT THE? comedy game series, played by millions worldwide. From our home in central Copenhagen, more than 60 wonderful humans are united by a simple mission: to make everyone laugh.
WHAT THE CAR? is our absurdly silly racing adventure game which addresses fundamental questions such as… What if a car had legs? Or a jetpack? Or secretly identified as a sailboat? First launched in 2023 on Apple Arcade and now also on Steam, it has gained a steady following of dedicated fans who have contributed hundreds of thousands of community-built levels.
We’re looking for a Senior Gameplay Programmer to help us continue to build upon CAR’s success by expanding upon its absurdly silly universe! We believe the best people to come up with ideas are the ones implementing them, so we expect a high degree of creativity and game design knowledge from our Gameplay Programmers, in addition to their crazy tech skills. This role involves around 60% programming and 40% game design.
Here’s what that looks like day to day
Build and ship gameplay code. You’ll implement features end-to-end in an existing Unity/C# codebase and ship regularly in a live environment.
Generate design ideas. You’ll take part in shaping features, articulate intent, evaluate tradeoffs, and iterate through discussion with the team.
Keep the game healthy. Fix bugs, improve systems, review test videos, and document findings so issues don’t come back to haunt us.
Extend and refine what’s there. You’ll build on existing mechanics, making them more robust and enjoyable for players.
Support and collaborate. You’re part of a small, closely knit, cross discipline team where people help each other reach their goals.
Prototype and let go. Not everything ships, and that’s fine. Comfort with iteration and refactoring is part of the job.
You’re a great match if
You have 8+ years of commercial game development experience, having shipped at least two games as part of a team
You have strong Unity and C# skills. You’re comfortable navigating a shared codebase and writing maintainable code you’d be proud to hand off
You care about stability, performance, and long-term maintainability, and you leave systems better than you found them
You genuinely value collaboration and working very closely with every member of the team
You approach other people’s ideas with openness and try to understand the intention before giving feedback or pushing back
